They came away with the top two highest honors of the competition: Winning Alliance Team Captain and Inspire Award. This is a pretty remarkable achievement, especially considering these students are in their rookie season, never having competed in this type of robotics program. They now advance to play again in the Super Regional Championship in San Antonio on March 9-11. At that competition, these students will be competing with 72 other teams from 12 states for a chance to attend the FTC World Robotics Championship.
The students on Team #9868 "Jag Wires" are: Jose Sandoval, Noe Monjaraz, Sarah Ballard, Cheyenne Killebrew, Yaretzi Sandoval, Jaycee McCauley, JJ Gibson, Kaylie Green, Morgan McCauley and Tristan Story. We are all very proud of these students' accomplishments. Way to go! The Guthrie Jaguars will play the Crowell Wildcats for the Bi-District Championship on Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00 pm in Hamlin. Ticket prices will be $5 for adults and $3 for students. Go Jaguars!
Playoff t-shirt orders are due by Tuesday, February 16th by 3:30pm. To place your order, you can email Sammie Jones at [email protected] or leave a comment on the GCSD Facebook page. Please be sure to include sizes and quantities.
T-shirts will be delivered at school on Friday February 19th. Payment must be received by Friday before delivery. T-shirts are $15 each. Everyone is invited to the Guthrie Robotics Open House, scheduled for this Thursday (February 11) from 6:00-7:00pm. It will be held in Mr. Wilson's classroom and will be a chance for everyone to see up close how the GCSD robotics program operates. The event will be open to students, parents, teachers, family and community members. The GCSD robotics team members will give talks, answer questions and demo robots during this come-and-go open house.
These students are hosting this open house event as part of their FTC Regional Robotics Contest. They are required to do several community outreach projects and incorporate those into their formal team presentations and judges interviews. Their next contest is on Saturday, February 20 at Frenship HS. Please help them prepare for that by attending and listening to their talks, watching their demos and asking questions. Every interaction they have on Thursday evening will help better prepare them for their contest. Your presence will also provide a much needed morale boost to these kids. They've worked literally every day since the first day of school preparing for this contest. Its a lot of work with minimal exposure and only a few chances for outside affirmations. Hope you'll be able to attend! CLICK HERE for the 2016 JH & HS Track Schedule. Go Jags and Lady Jags!
Two Guthrie High School robotics teams competed in the FIRST FTC North League Championships at Frenship HS on Saturday, January 23. This competition involved schools from the entire Texas Panhandle area, drawing teams from schools from all classifications: 1A to 6A. Students competed in the FIRST RES-Q robot game competition and a team presentation and judges interview. The Guthrie students started preparing for this contest in August and have competed in 15 qualifying matches over the past three months to make it to Saturday's competition.
The two Guthrie teams finished 1st and 2nd overall. The teams ended up playing each other in the final match for the North League Championship. Team 9868 "Jag Wires" won the overall Championship. Team 9869 "Guthrie Jags" won the Inspire Award, which was the highest overall judged award. Actually, the Guthrie teams placed 1st and 2nd place for that award. "The students worked really hard for months, designing and building their robots and preparing their engineering notebooks and presentations," said Mr. Wilson, the Guthrie Robotics coach. "It takes a great deal of high level thinking for months at a time to do well in these contest. Participation in a program like ours will pay off for students later in life, as they learn to think carefully through complex challenges and come up with creative solutions to tough problems." These students will advance to the FIRST FTC Regional Championship contest that will take place on February 20th. The students on Team 9868 "Jag Wires" are: Jose Sandoval, Noe Monjaraz, Sarah Ballard, Jaycee McCauley, Morgan McCauley, Tristan Story and JJ Gibson The students on Team 9869 "Guthrie Jags" are: Yaretzi Sandoval, Cheyenne Killebrew, Nick Mitchell, Levi Jones, Kaylie Green and Emily Rocha We had a team pull out of the tournament.
